Electrical and chemical synapses differ fundamentally in their transmission mechanisms. (A) At electrical synapses, gap junctions occur between pre- and postsynaptic membranes. (B) Gap junctions contain con- nexon channels that permit current to flow passively from the presynaptic cell to the postsynaptic cell.
